About Our Early Learning Centre
The Mitcham Early Parenting Centre (formerly known as the Mother Baby Unit) was established in 1994 to provide specialised support and care to families experiencing postnatal difficulties in the weeks and months following the arrival of a new baby, up to twelve months of age.
These difficulties may include:
- Feeding difficulties
- Infant sleeping problems
- Unsettled / irritable infants
- Reflux and colic
- Adjusting to parenthood
Although located in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, our newly refurbished unit provides services to families from all parts of Victoria. We offer individual support and planning to suit your family over a 5-night residential stay, during which time there is opportunity for education, rest, support and group discussions.
The unit features 6 luxurious private suites, all with comfortable double beds and access to modern dining and lounge area. Our Early Parenting Centre is also able to provide overnight accommodation for partners (at an additional cost).
Following discharge we will support you with telephone contact as required.
The Program
The Early Parenting Centre inpatient program is an intensive 5-night program delivered at Mitcham Private Hospital. To be eligible for the program, your baby must be between the age of 6 weeks and 12 months, not be actively walking and needs to be immunised.
On arrival, a General Practitioner will admit you to the unit and will be available throughout your stay for consultation. Treatment commences with a thorough assessment of your baby’s health including development and behaviour. This will assist in informing the program which will be comprised of one-on-one and group sessions, practical demonstrations and family group discussions.
The Early Parenting Centre is staffed by Registered Nurses, Midwives, Mothercraft Nurses and Enrolled Nurses. During your stay, staff are available to review your progress and provide support throughout the program, offering compassionate, hands-on help as required. If required you will also have access to a multidisciplinary team including lactation consultants, paediatricians, psychologists and psychiatrists.
